Interview in Turkish Photo Magazine

Here you can read my first interview ever in a Turkish Magazine. They are called Fotoritim. In addition to the peculiarly wonderful translations of the interview questions, it was interesting to have people from my photo world asking me questions about Turkish folksongs I might know cause of my affiliation with Balkan singing.

TableauVivant in the New York Times

Yesterday, my Tableau Vivant series was mentioned in an article by Melena Ryzik in the Arts and Design section of the New York Times in an article at New York parties that still have excitement and cultural energy!  Social Disrobing and Other Party Fare highlights, “For the last year the photographer Sarah Small has been organizing tableaux vivants in unusual spaces, photographing performers in lively and frozen states of undress…”

May 8th Mini-Tableau Performance Reviewed in Germany’s Welt Kompakt

Here is my May 8th Tableau Vivant review in Welt Kompakt:

My favorite part about the layout is the near-touching Obama proximity.

Below the scan of the article are the translation attempts so far. Note the “bacon folds” reference. I have no idea what this could be referring to!

92 Y Tribeca- Mini-Tableau, Exhibition, Singing

The second Mini-Tableau will take place at the Tribeca Y, as one component of a larger 2-day event to kick-off Women’s History Month. Part of the experiment in this Mini-Tableau will be to enlist one of my models into the creation/direction of the Tableau itself. I have asked Laura (who you will recognize as a model from my website – images including # 5,11,22,38), to model, yes, but also to cast and choreograph some dancers into ballet-inspired movement against the backdrop of live music and within the context of the larger pool of models. This evening is curated by the enigmatic Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond, collaborations with David Byrne, The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens).

I also have a solo exhibition of my still photography series, The Delirium Constructions, that will open on March 5th in the gallery space and throughout the building. Additionally, my a Cappella quartet, Black Sea Hotel will be performing both nights, along with Shara Worden and various other artists, musicians, and performers.

NY Press Review of Tribeca Y Event

The NY Press came to our event last night. Here’s a short write-up.

Black Sea Hotel- Punk Rock Les Mystere

Here is review of a recent Black Sea Hotel gig. We particularly like this one cause they call us a “punk-rock version of Les Mystere Des Voix Bulgares.” -I just love that. We are the 4th and 5th paragraphs down, if you’re curious.

Mini-Tableau at Salon Ciel

The second in the series of mini-Tableaux ,that will proceed the October 16th event, will take place this coming Friday, February 19th. I will be constructing a Tableau of 12 models and one singer, Willa Roberts. I will also be showing the film-short (directed by Leah Meyerhoff) that was created at last year’s Tableau. In addition, I will be exhibiting selected photographs from my still series, The Delirium Constructions, along side a whole slew of images from my personal archive (translation: my jam-packed photo closet). This salon-style, mixed-genre exhibition and Tableaux-fundraiser has been curated by Lyndsey Beutin, and is graciously hosted by Salon Ceil. This takes place in a penthouse in Union Square. Because the cozy Salon-style venue, the invites are limited. If you are very interested in attending, let me know, and I will do my best to accommodate you. I have a limited number of guests. Note: I have also opened up a limited edition of affordable small prints that will be on sale only one night, at this event- proceeds will benefit the Tableau Vivant project. Documents of the evening can be seen here.
